A World of Peace
No outward thing - nothing, nobody from without - can hurt me inside, psychologically. I recognized that I could only be hurt psychologically by my own wrong actions, which I have control over; by my own wrong reactions (they are tricky, but I have control over them too); or by my own inaction in some situations, like the present world situation, that need action from me. When I recognized all this how free I felt! And I just stopped hurting myself.

-Peace Pilgrim
from 'Her Life and Works in Her Own Words'
Only when there are many people who are pools of peace, silence, understanding, will war disappear.

-Osho
In separateness lies the world's great misery; in compassion lies the world's true strength.

-Buddha

Each one has to find his peace from within. And peace to be real must be unaffected by outside circumstances.

-Mahatma Gandhi
There is no time left for anything but to make peace work a dimension of our every waking activity.

-Elise Boulding
God does not send us despair in order to kill us; he sends it in order to awaken us to new life.

-Herman Hesse
Chapter 30: Not Making War

Those who lead people by following the Tao
don't use weapons to enforce their will.
Using force always leads to unseen troubles.
In the places where armies march,
thorns and briars bloom and grow.
After armies take to war,
bad years must always follow.
The skillful commander
strikes a decisive blow then stops.
When victory is won over the enemy through war
it is not a thing of great pride.
When the battle is over,
arrogance is the new enemy.
War can result when no other alternative is given,
so the one who overcomes an enemy should not dominate them.
The strong always weakened with time.
This is not the way of the Tao.

Lao Tzu from the Tao Te Ching
Truth does not fight against illusions,
nor do illusions fight against the truth.
Illusions battle only with themselves.

A Course In Miracles
The real Art of Peace is not to sacrifice a single one of your warriors to defeat an enemy. Vanquish your foes by always keeping yourself in a safe and unassailable position; then no one will suffer any losses. The Way of a Warrior, the Art of Politics, is to stop trouble before it starts. It consists in defeating your adversaries spiritually by making them realize the folly of their actions. The Way of a Warrior is to establish harmony.

-Morihei Ueshiba
Change your thoughts, and you change your world.

-Norman Vincent Peale
I really see no other solution than to turn inwards and to root out all the rottenness there. I no longer believe that we can change anything in the world until we first change ourselves. And that seems to me the only lesson to be learned from this war.

-Etty Hillesum (concentration camp victim)
A good soldier is not violent.
A good fighter is not angry.
A good winner is not vengeful
A good employer is humble.
This is known as the Virtue of not striving.
This is known as ability to deal with people.
This since ancient times has been known as the ultimate unity with heaven.

Lao Tzu, from the Tao Te Ching Translated by Jane English and Gia-Fu Feng
While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart.

-St. Francis of Assisi
If we do not change our direction we are likely to end up where we are headed for.

-Chinese Proverb
Without illusions
there can be no fear,
no doubt
and no attack.
Illusion recognized must disappear.

-A Course in Miracles
There is nothing outside you.
That is what you must ultimately learn.
Deep within you
is everything that is perfect,
ready to radiate through you
and out into the world.

-A Course in Miracles
If your heart is large enough to envelop your adversaries, you can see right through them and avoid their attacks. And once you envelop them, you will be able to guide them along a path indicated to you by heaven and earth.

-Morihei Ueshiba
The Divine is not something high above us. It is in heaven, it is in earth, it is inside us.

The world is not to be put in order; the world is order, incarnate. It is for us to harmonize with this order.

-Henry Miller
Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.

-Martin Luther King, Jr.
Back To Words of Wisdom
The greatest battles are fought within oneself.

-Unknown
Peace is to be found only within, and unless one finds it there he will never find it at all. Peace lies not in the external world. It lies within one's own soul.

Ralph W. Trine
Peace originates with the flow of
things-- its heart is like the movement of
the wind and waves.  The Way is like the
veins that circulate blood through our
bodies, following the natural flow of the
life force.  If you are separated in the
slightest from that divine essence, you
are far off the path.

-Morihei Ueshiba
We can say 'Peace on Earth,' we can sing about it, preach about it or pray about it, but if we have not internalized the mythology to make it happen inside us, then it will not be.

-Betty Shabazz
When someone at peace and free from hurry enters a room, that person has a calming effect on everyone present.

-Eknath Easwaran
No tree has branches so foolish as to fight amongst themselves.

-Ojibwa Indian saying
I count him braver who overcomes his desires
than him who conquers his enemies;
for the hardest victory is the victory over self.

-Aristotle
The place to improve the world
is first in one's own heart and head
and hands.

-Robert M. Persig
If the slayer thinks that he kills and if the slain thinks that he dies, neither knows the ways of truth.  The Eternal in man cannot kill, the Eternal in man cannot die.

-Katha Upanishad
We can bomb the world to pieces,
but we can't bomb it into peace.

-Michael Franti and Spearhead
We must not bring one war to an end-- or thirty-- but the idea of war itself.

-Deepak Chopra
Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.

-Martin Luther King, Jr.
